TOY SHOPPING
3 keys to
keeping
kids safe
THEY
can aid a child’s development
and provide countless hours of fun.
But toys can have a far less positive
impact on children too. Each year they
cause hundreds of thousands of injuries,
whether it’s minor cuts and scrapes or
choking.
If you’re toy shopping, keep these key
safety tips in mind:
w
Know what to avoid. For kids younger
than 3 years old, it’s best to steer clear
of toys with small parts. And for kids
younger than 8 years old, avoid toys
with sharp edges and electrical toys,
such as those with parts that heat up.
w
Read labels. Choose only toys that
are appropriate for the child’s age,
abilities and interest level. And follow
all safety advice.
w
Look for quality construction. For
example, the parts and seams on
stuffed animals should be secure.
Plastic toys should be sturdy and
difficult to break.
