Fall 2014
AFTER
seven years of physical
therapy on his right shoulder and two
years of pain management injections to
both his shoulders, the time had come
for Mark Deml, of Medford, to undergo
surgery.
His exercises and injections were
no longer helping ease his pain, so
orthopaedic surgeon Eric Thiel, MD,
a Bone & Joint Center at Medford
specialist on staff at Aspirus Medford
Hospital, sent Deml for an imaging test.
Results showed rotator cuff tears in both
his shoulders.
Deml chose Aspirus Medford Hospital
for his March 2014 arthroscopic surgery
on his right shoulder.
“My surgeon, Dr. Thiel, has the
best bedside manner I’ve ever seen,”
Deml says. “The whole surgical team is
excellent.”
Among those Deml counts as
especially deserving of praise are
nurse Kristin Schmidt, who prepared
him for surgery; nurse Amy Henke,
who comforted him on his trip to the

him a nerve block so he could sleep
through the surgery without any pain.
“We are so lucky to have all these
people to help when we’re in pain,”
Deml says. “I’d recommend Aspirus
Medford and its staff to anyone.”
Therapy helps healing
Arthroscopic shoulder surgery
doesn’t require much in-hospital
recovery time. Deml went home the
same day as his surgery.
To make sure his shoulder healed
properly, Deml chose to undergo
physical rehabilitation at Aspirus
Therapy & Fitness–Medford under
the guidance of physical therapist Rick
Schneveis, PT.
“I have a great therapist,” Deml says.
“He teaches me well so I can do my
exercises correctly at home. I believe
that’s the answer to recovering—taking
your therapy seriously and doing your
exercises daily as instructed.”
