Fall 2014
7 tips for storing
medicine safely
To avoid mix-ups and problems, keep
medicine:
1.
In its original container. The amber color
protects the medicine from light, and the
proper label will give you important information,
such as what the medicine is and how often to
take it.
2.
In a dry, cool place. Because of heat and
humidity, the bathroom isn’t a good choice.
3.
In a secure spot, away from kids, teens,
strangers and others.
4.
Separated from other people’s medicines
and from pet medications.
5.
With lids tightly closed. This helps prevent
children from getting into
medicine.
6.
In a well-lit spot.
If you can’t see
what you’re grabbing
and taking, you may
accidentally use the
wrong medicine.
7.
Stable. Remove
and toss the cotton
ball that comes in
some bottles of
medicine. It can
absorb moisture
and affect the
quality of the
pills inside.

Breast cancer:
Find it early
Katie Sackmann, a medical assistant at Aspirus Medford Clinic, feeds her daughter Amelia (pictured
above) breast milk to give her a good start at life.
Breastfeeding is best
Breast milk is the best food for babies. One important reason health
care providers recommend breastfeeding is that breast milk contains
antibodies that help protect against illnesses such as diarrhea, ear
infections and pneumonia.
Every two minutes a woman in the United
States finds out she has breast cancer.
And every 13 minutes a woman will die from
the disease, according to the American Cancer
Society. Many of these lives could be saved if
women were to have regular mammograms, or
breast x-rays.
The goal of these screening exams is
to find cancer before it starts to cause
symptoms. Breast cancers found during
screening exams are more likely to be smaller
and easier to treat.
